Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness which results in a deeply relaxed state with significantly enhanced concentration and focus.
To comprehend how hypnosis works it is helpful to perceive the mind in two parts – the conscious and the subconscious. The conscious mind is the ‘weaker’ part that contains the temporary memory, reasoning capabilities, and the will power centre. The subconscious mind is the real ‘powerhouse’ – it controls the imagination, emotions and most importantly, the permanent memory. Hypnosis provides a pathway for accessing the subconscious mind. It allows the individual to pinpoint the issue at hand to focus on altering his or her perception of a particular activity or habit that needs improvement.
Myths & Misconceptions
Popular images of stage hypnosis can be misleading – stage hypnotists select volunteers who are keen to undergo the experience and mentally have a desire to please the audience by behaving as the hypnotist suggests. Clinical hypnosis is far removed from a stage show and does not result in bizarre behaviour. Clients remain seated and do not pretend to be something they are not.
